What does “richest today” mean?

Richest Today is the title held, for one calendar day, by whoever has paid the most — in blind, non-refundable bids, starting at $1 — to claim it on richest.today. It resets every midnight Pacific Time and is not a measure of net worth.
This is not the same claim as the richest person in the world. That is a net-worth ranking — Forbes and Bloomberg’s estimate of what someone owns, revised annually or in real time. Richest today is something you win rather than accumulate: a title held outright for a day, in public, under a name of your choosing — taken by whoever wants it enough to outspend everyone else. Questions people actually ask
- Is “richest today” the same as “the richest person in the world”?
- No. “Richest person in the world” is a net-worth ranking — Forbes and Bloomberg’s estimate of what someone owns, updated annually or in real time. “Richest today” measures something else entirely: what someone was willing to pay, today, to hold the title. The holder need not be wealthy — only willing to outbid everyone else.
- How does someone become richest today?
- By bidding at least $1, in whole dollars. Bids from the same email address add together through the day, and whoever holds the highest total is named on the front page as the richest person today. Whoever is still in front at midnight Pacific Time takes that day for good: the result is recorded permanently, and the holder is issued a numbered certificate of it, free.
- Can anyone see how much the current holder paid?
- No. Bidding is blind. No amount — current, past, winning, or losing — is ever shown to anyone, including the holder themselves.
- Does today’s holder stay richest tomorrow?
- No — tomorrow is a new contest, decided only by that day’s bids. But the day they won stays theirs: it is recorded permanently, and the certificate for that day is theirs alone. No day can be issued twice.
